NetChoice Announces Opposition to The Protecting Americans from Dangerous Algorithms Act

Today, NetChoice announced its opposition to the Protecting Americans from Dangerous Algorithms Act. This bill, sponsored by Rep. Malinowski (D-NJ) and Rep. Eshoo (D-CA), plans to amend Section 230 by holding companies liable for users’ extremist content propagated through their content moderation algorithms.

“The Protecting Americans from Dangerous Algorithms Act would likely mean social media sites are forced to take down legitimate speech, potentially even posts by groups like Black Lives Matter, just to ensure social media businesses retain the liability protections provided through Section 230,” said Carl Szabo, Vice President and General Counsel at NetChoice.

“This legislation aims to turn social media sites into the online police, which violates our foundational values of free speech—online or otherwise. This bill will likely lead to the over-removal of content while criminals remain free and undeterred,” continued Szabo.
