Statement of NetChoice Executive Director Steve DelBianco on California Mobile Privacy Guidelines
We applaud the California Attorney General for addressing the emerging privacy challenges facing app developers. These are reasonable guidelines, but if turned into law, this document could become a roadmap to ruin for California’s economy and its thousands of cutting-edge companies.
Legislators should not transform today’s helpful recommendations into tomorrow’s harmful laws.
A recommendation that privacy be considered early in the development process makes a lot of sense. But if this became a legal requirement, businesses based in California would need to get a privacy permission slip from the state government. Under an open government privacy approval process, competitors and privacy advocates could see and replicate innovations before they came to market.
In the end, this prior approval law would encourage innovative businesses to leave the state.
