Republicans Should Resist the Urge to Give Biden Control Over Social Media

WASHINGTON—Today, the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee will mark up a proposal that would give President Joe Biden authority over which social media companies are allowed on American devices.

“Concerns over the role of Chinese businesses operating in the U.S. are currently being addressed by our national security agencies,” said NetChoice Vice President & General Counsel Carl Szabo. “But handing Biden this type of power over free speech would be a sizable grant of authority, especially as Congress is investigating how our government has already abused its existing power to influence social media moderation decisions.”

Szabo continued: “Congress should focus on working with American national security agencies to keep Americans safe and secure, not handing government broad authority over commerce, speech and expression online.”
