Meanwhile, in Nashville: At a markup held by the Tennessee Senate’s Labor and Commerce Committee on Tuesday, industry lobbyists attacked one Republican-led privacy bill for not quite conforming to Virginia or Utah’s privacy frameworks. Carl Szabo, the vice president and general counsel for tech lobbying group NetChoice, testified that despite changes made by the sponsors at the tech industry’s urging, the Tennessee bill would still cost too much for businesses to implement.
“It’s close, as the sponsor said, to the Virginia model … [and] it’s close to the Utah model,” Szabo said. “But unfortunately, like in horseshoes and hand grenades, close doesn’t always cut it.”
