WASHINGTON—Today, Sens. Josh Hawley and Richard Blumenthal are expected to bring their poorly written bill to regulate artificial intelligence to the Senate for a vote.
Put simply, this bill is bad. Not only has the No Section 230 Immunity for AI Act never received a hearing, but its writers have not properly scrutinized the definitions in their own legislation. It is merely a rush to “do something” on AI instead of taking the time to understand what is being regulated and how.
“AI is the new, shiny object piquing politicians’ interest. But lawmakers must not race to regulate AI before they even understand it, or recognize which existing laws already regulate it. This legislation and other bills like it risk bringing American innovation and investment to a screeching halt,” said Carl Szabo, NetChoice Vice President & General Counsel. “The bill doesn’t even correctly define ‘artificial intelligence,’ showing that it is not ready for serious discussion or consideration. Senators must reject this push and insist on regular order.”
