WASHINGTON—On Friday, Google filed its counter-proposal for remedies to a court in its clash with the Biden-Harris Justice Department (DOJ), which is seeking to break apart the company for being too innovative and too well-liked by American consumers.
Last month, the Biden DOJ submitted an expansive remedy request to the court, asking the judge to force Google to break off from its Chrome browser and Android operating system, prevent Google from competing in search, force the company to share users’ search data with competitors, and hamstring Google research and development in artificial intelligence (AI) technology. This radical proposal, if adopted, would not only hurt innovation and consumers—it would set back America’s lead over China in AI and quantum computing.
“Instead of proposing remedies proportionate to the court’s narrow ruling, Biden’s DOJ asked the court to dismantle America’s leadership in innovation. The parting shot of the Biden-Harris administration would tear apart Google – the most innovative technology company in the world. The court should discard Biden’s drastic requests that have nothing to do with the search default deals in this case, and would actually harm American consumers,” said Steve DelBianco, NetChoice President & CEO. “America’s technology future is at stake in this trial. Our global dominance, economic health, security and choice must not be tossed into the dumpster as the Biden administration heads for the exits.”
President Donald Trump recognizes the danger of Biden’s breakup proposal, as he told the Economic Club of Chicago: “It’s a very dangerous thing, because we want to have great companies. We don’t want China to have these companies.”
Antitrust law in America is supposed to protect consumer welfare from demonstrable harm. Instead, throughout his tenure, Biden’s enforcers have weaponized antitrust as a tool for progressives to advance their political agendas with little regard for the choices and welfare of consumers or for the impact of such actions on them. It’s time to firmly reject this overreach and put American consumers and their welfare back at the center of antitrust enforcement.
