Today, NetChoice announced opposition to the “Bust Up Big Tech Act” — a bill introduced by Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) designed to ban successful American businesses from concurrently running and using online marketplaces.
“This is an obvious attempt to weaponize antitrust for political purposes and would limit consumer choice and raise prices for Americans,” said Carl Szabo, Vice President and General Counsel at NetChoice. “This proposal flies in the face of conservative values and would stifle innovation, punish success, and dash entrepreneurs’ hope for venture capital investment.”
“59% of Americans oppose proposals like Sen. Hawley’s that would ban businesses like Walmart from selling their own generic products alongside name-brand competitors on their digital marketplaces,” continued Szabo. “When America’s robust markets provide a competitive edge internationally, proposals like this would cede economic growth and technological innovation to our global competitors.”
