Today, NetChoice announced its opposition to the PACT Act, a bill introduced by Sen. Thune (R-SD) and Sen. Schatz (D-HI). The bill would amend Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, the law that fosters an open, innovative internet.
“By attaching counterproductive strings to Section 230, this bill would make it harder for online platforms to focus on removing harmful content in an especially turbulent election season,” said Carl Szabo, Vice President and General Counsel at NetChoice. “We should enable platforms to remove harmful content, not weigh them down with unnecessary regulations.”
“By forcing online platforms to reveal details on how they moderate content, the bill gives bad actors a cheat sheet for gaming the very systems designed to protect us from their harmful content,” continued Szabo. “By forcing platforms to provide information on content moderation practices, the PACT Act makes it easier for bad actors to circumvent protections against spam, terrorist content, and fraud.”
