WASHINGTON—Last night, House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) and Ranking Member Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) introduced H.R. 7532, the Federal AI Governance and Transparency Act.
This is the right approach to artificial intelligence (AI) policymaking, and NetChoice applauds Chairman Comer and Ranking Member Raskin for their work on this important issue. While the bill still has some edges that need to be smoothed out, we look forward to working with the Committee to improve and advance this important legislation.
“The Federal AI Governance and Transparency Act is a strong step forward in ensuring the federal government deploys AI in a responsible and ethical fashion, with appropriate visibility to the American public. The bill institutes needed safeguards and oversight without overly constraining innovation,” said Carl Szabo, NetChoice Vice President & General Counsel. “While there are still changes that need to be made to the bill, this is the right approach to AI governance.”
This bill takes important steps to increase transparency and accountability around the federal government’s use of AI systems. The requirement for agencies to maintain public AI governance charters is a critical provision. Independent Inspector General evaluations of agency AI practices, as mandated in the bill, also provide a much-needed oversight mechanism.
