Biden’s AI Red Tape Wishlist Gets Congressional Oversight

WASHINGTON—This afternoon, the House Oversight Committee will hold a subcommittee hearing to review President Joe Biden’s Red Tape Wishlist for artificial intelligence (AI).

The sweeping executive order, released in October, takes a very broad and restrictive approach to American AI development. This order, if implemented as Biden desires, would put the future of U.S. innovation and global technological dominance at risk.

“The White House’s approach to AI would result in an expansive regulatory scheme for the wider economy. Rather than doing the hard work of looking at how existing laws can be applied to new tools like AI, Biden has chosen to further increase presidential power over innovation,” said Carl Szabo, NetChoice Vice President & General Counsel. “It is important that Congress thoroughly scrutinize this approach and understand how taking the President’s route will stifle new companies and competitors from entering the marketplace and significantly expand the federal power.”

Szabo continued: “Biden’s AI Red Tape Wishlist is especially dangerous for America’s global standing as the leading technological innovators, and Congress should not go along with it.”
