WASHINGTON—This morning, the U.S. House Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on, “Europe’s Threat to American Speech and Innovation.” NetChoice applauds the Committee’s continued, bold leadership to put an end to foreign censorship efforts that are threatening Americans’ rights online.
Europe’s aggressive digital regulations, including the EU Digital Services Act, the EU Digital Markets Act and the UK Online Safety Act, are being wielded as bludgeons against American enterprise and free speech. Congress must follow the House Judiciary Committee’s leadership and take action now to protect our rights and our economy from this foreign interference.
“Europe and the UK are using their digital censorship laws to silence and stifle American citizens online. We should demand better from our allies, especially those that purport to follow our Western tradition. These laws blatantly infringe on all our rights, and NetChoice praises the House Judiciary Committee’s bold leadership to stop it,” said Amy Bos, NetChoice Vice President of Government Affairs.
Bos continued: “Congress should ensure American rights are protected online, whether they are exercised at home or abroad. We must also refuse to import Europe’s failed censorship and regulatory models. Policymakers should reject proposed Euro-style restrictions and instead stand up for American innovation and free expression.”
