WASHINGTON—Today, the U.S. House of Representatives is expected to consider H.R. 7520, the Protecting Americans’ Data from Foreign Adversaries Act of 2024. This proposal is an important first step in securing data privacy protections for Americans, but Congress still needs to work on a national privacy standard.
Americans have frequently expressed in various polling that they want lawmakers to make U.S. data privacy and security the biggest tech policy priority in Congress. Meanwhile, cyberattacks are increasing in frequency, and Americans are raising questions about how to protect privacy as generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools are integrated into their lives and businesses.
“While the Protecting Americans’ Data from Foreign Adversaries Act of 2024 is an important first step to help secure data privacy in the U.S., Congress must take on the essential task of negotiating a comprehensive national privacy standard so all Americans can be properly protected, no matter what state they reside in or who is handling their data,” said Carl Szabo, NetChoice Vice President & General Counsel. “Until lawmakers make implementing a national privacy standard a priority, American data will not be properly protected, and businesses across the U.S. will continue to struggle with the growing patchwork of complex and contradictory state laws.”
