From the House Judiciary Committee’s antitrust package this summer to impending legislative proposals, anti-tech fervor has made antitrust the new tech policy buzzword.
Today, NetChoice released the first video in a three-part series explaining how American antitrust works. The series will educate viewers about key issues in antitrust, such as core concepts like the consumer welfare standard, and the potential consequences of legislative proposals and antitrust actions.
This video explains the consumer welfare standard, showing that it enables businesses to be free to compete and innovate, but not harm consumers. This enables strong competition that provides consumers with lower prices, higher quality products, and more innovative services and goods.
“Robust competition in digital markets provides consumers with low-cost, free-to-use services that they and they alone can choose to use,” said Robert Winterton, Director of Public Affairs at NetChoice. “America’s focus on protecting consumer welfare and competition has supercharged our economic growth, driving down the price of goods while increasing American GDP and spurring innovation.”
“Now more than ever, we need to think about the impact legislative proposals could have on Americans and American small businesses,” continued Winterton. “America is the global leader in technology and innovation but enacting laws that follow the Chinese-European antitrust law abandons our competitive edge to international competitors and saddles American consumers, small businesses, and leaders with the resulting harm.”
