NetChoice Applauds House GOP for Releasing Bill to Protect Speech from Government Interference

This week, House Energy and Commerce Committee Republican Leader Cathy McMorris Rodgers, Oversight and Reform Committee Ranking Member James Comer and House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jim Jordan introduced HR 8752, the Protecting Speech from Government Interference Act.

NetChoice applauds this effort from House Republicans to protect American citizens and businesses from being coerced into suppressing speech by politically-motivated bureaucrats.

In July, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) approved a similar resolution urging Congress and the Department of Justice to investigate the Biden White House for pressuring social media platforms to restrict user posts about COVID and other politically-charged topics.

“We are glad to see House Republicans standing tall for the First Amendment. It has been harrowing to have the Biden administration wield their powers to insult and intimidate private businesses that allow users to share their own news and views,” said NetChoice President and CEO Steve DelBianco. “As the First Amendment says, the government shall not suppress free speech, but should instead encourage Americans’ active participation in policy discussions.”

“We’ve seen officials in Biden’s bureaucracy harass those they disfavor, be it businesses, individuals, or ideas,” continued DelBianco. “NetChoice applauds House Republicans for holding this administration to account for trampling on the First Amendment.”
