Meta announced this month that it is expanding its Richland Parish data center to 5 gigawatts of compute capacity, making the campus one of the largest AI infrastructure projects in the world. The expansion investment will reshape what’s possible for the families who call Richland Parish home.

Since breaking ground in December 2024, the Richland Parish site has grown from a single data center into a flagship of Meta’s global AI buildout. Once fully operational, the campus is expected to support more than 1,000 permanent roles in a community where good-paying, long-term jobs have historically been scarce. Data centers like this one are becoming the backbone of the digital economy, the physical infrastructure that makes everything from everyday apps to AI tools possible, and Richland Parish is proof that this necessary infrastructure can be built in and benefit America’s heartland.

Teachers Are Seeing the Difference Firsthand

Perhaps the clearest sign of the project’s impact is in Richland Parish classrooms. Rising tax revenue tied to the data center has allowed the school district to pay its teachers annual bonuses up to $50,000, a 400% increase from the year before. Richland Parish School District Superintendent Sheldon Jones called it “life-altering” for teachers and families, noting that “When a school district can suddenly compete for the best educators in the region, the benefits compound for an entire generation of students.”

Building a Local Workforce for the Long Term

Enduring economic development requires a skilled workforce, and Meta is investing directly into that pipeline. The company has donated $5 million to Louisiana Delta Community College (LDCC) to fund full scholarships for Richland Parish high school graduates, beginning with the Class of 2026. Students will be able to use the scholarships toward any relevant trade certificate or course, from electrical work and HVAC to fiber optics and data center operations. LDCC Chancellor Dr. Justin Hoggard noted how the gift is removing financial barriers, allowing local students to pursue life-changing careers without having to leave their homes and community. This kind of direct investment in education is exactly how data center projects represent generational opportunities for local communities, not just for the workers hired on day one, but for the students who will fill these roles for decades to come.

Energy Investment That Protects Consumers

Large-scale infrastructure earns lasting community support when it doesn’t put new costs on residents’ shoulders. Meta has structured its Richland Parish expansion so that the company, not local ratepayers, covers the energy, water, and related infrastructure costs. Having already provided more than $1 billion in local infrastructure improvements, including roads and water infrastructure, Meta’s agreement with Entergy Louisiana is expected to save customers more than $2.65 billion over 20 years, in addition to the previous $650 million that was announced as a result of Meta helping Entergy Louisiana break ground on new, state-of-the-art generation facilities.

Investment, Not Extraction
