FTC Advances Accountability in Government Censorship Efforts Online

WASHINGTON—Today, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced a public comment period for Americans to inform the agency about their experiences with online censorship.

NetChoice appreciates the FTC’s efforts to expose government censorship and encourages the Commission to ensure the First Amendment rights of Americans and businesses are protected, as outlined by the Supreme Court in Moody v. NetChoice.

The Trump administration’s efforts to end government censorship should be commended. The FTC’s investigation into whether users were adequately informed about government entities’ role in censorship—including foreign governments—represents an important step toward accountability. We encourage the Commission to help ensure such state censorship online is exposed while respecting the protected First Amendment rights of Americans and our businesses, as recognized by the Supreme Court in Moody v. NetChoice,” said Patrick Hedger, Director of Policy at NetChoice.

We look forward to working with President Trump and his administration to protect free expression and free enterprise online and prevent government interference in digital speech around the globe.
