Senate: Keep AI Leadership American and Stop the Red Tape Patchwork

WASHINGTON—This weekend, the Senate Parliamentarian ruled that a provision in the budget reconciliation package establishing a temporary pause on state-level artificial intelligence (AI) regulation complied with Senate rules. This forward-looking proposal would give Congress the space to craft national rules that promote innovation, protect consumers and ensure America leads in the global AI race without more than 1000 regulations crushing it

“A 50-state patchwork of conflicting and confusing AI laws would strangle innovation, crush small businesses under red tape and hand an edge to foreign competitors like China,” said Amy Bos, NetChoice Director of State & Federal Affairs. “NetChoice calls on the Senate to keep this big, beautiful provision in the reconciliation package.”

Bos continued: “A temporary pause on state AI regulation gives Congress the room to develop clear, consistent and nationwide policies that protect Americans while empowering our innovators to thrive. Without federal action, America risks falling behind in the future of tech development, while entrepreneurs are left to navigate a regulatory maze that stifles progress and undermines our global leadership.”
