WASHINGTON—Yesterday, NetChoice submitted a comment to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on its Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) on “Modernizing Spectrum Sharing for Satellite Broadband.” This vital initiative seeks to update decades-old regulations impacting non-geostationary satellite systems, which are crucial for expanding high-speed internet access.
“The current spectrum-sharing rules are a relic of a bygone era and antiquated science. For too long, these outdated rules have stifled innovation and limited the reach of satellite broadband, particularly in urban areas,” said Zach Lilly, NetChoice Deputy Director of State & Federal Affairs. “It’s time for America to lead. NetChoice commends the FCC for taking this critical step to ensure Americans can fully benefit from the transformative power of the internet and digital services.”
In our comment, Lilly emphasized that these limitations are no longer technically justified and needlessly hinder the ability of these satellite systems to provide robust internet services. Modernizing these standards in the U.S. will not only unlock greater competition and improved broadband options for Americans but also signal to the global community the need for regulatory reform that prioritizes consumers over protecting incumbents.
