NetChoice Welcomes Nationwide Bipartisan Standard for AI Governance in Great American AI Act

WASHINGTON—Today, Reps. Jay Obernolte and Lori Trahan released a discussion draft of the Great American AI Act, a commendable bipartisan effort to put forward a nationwide framework for America’s governance of artificial intelligence (AI).

“NetChoice applauds Reps. Obernolte and Trahan for coming together and negotiating a strong, nationwide bipartisan law to govern American AI. We look forward to working with them to ensure the bill protects Americans and our businesses so we can lead in this burgeoning innovation,” said Patrick Hedger, NetChoice Director of Policy.

Hedger continued: “The Great American AI Act is commendable, especially because it creates a federal standard, begins a study to protect Americans from government censorship, punishes bad actors abusing AI tools to hurt people rather than imposing unfair liability on platforms or developers, and bolsters educational efforts to ensure American students and workers are trained and prepared for the changes AI will bring to the workforce. There are some changes we’d like to work with the sponsors on, including the bill’s aggressive auditing regime and data sharing requirements for developers that could risk entrepreneurs’ trade secrets and private records. Overall, this draft is a great start, and we welcome the opportunity to collaborate with the bill sponsors on this laudable effort.”
