WASHINGTON—Today, NetChoice submitted comments on President Donald Trump’s request for information to identify regulatory barriers and opportunities for reform for artificial intelligence (AI) policymaking.
In our comment, NetChoice’s core recommendation is to finish scaling back President Biden’s “red tape wish list” for AI. The administration should also revisit Biden-era antitrust cases and burdensome Hart-Scott-Rodino merger rules that are based on outdated market definitions and hinder American innovators. Additionally, we call on the White House to support a congressional effort to pass a nationwide data privacy law that overrides state laws, providing businesses with a clear, consistent standard and consumers with streamlined protections.
“The Trump administration has laid out an ambitious, thoughtful and helpful agenda for advancing American AI investment and innovation. What the White House needs to do is begin executing on this agenda with haste,” said Patrick Hedger, NetChoice Director of Policy. “Competition from China is not waiting for the U.S. government to clear the way for American firms. There are several lingering policies from the Biden era that are still holding American AI back. These range from onerous and vague regulations and guidance documents to outlandish antitrust cases. The Trump administration deserves immense credit for its very positive steps so far on American AI leadership. These reforms will further bolster that effort.”
