House Judiciary Hearing Rightly Confronts Growing European Online Censorship of Americans

WASHINGTON—Today, the U.S. House Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on “Europe’s Threat to American Speech and Innovation.” NetChoice submitted a statement for the record, in which we commend the Committee for “addressing the growing threat European online censorship laws pose to Americans’ fundamental rights.”

Various laws across Europe, including the UK’s Online Safety Act, the EU’s Digital Services Act and the EU’s Digital Markets Act, are being wielded as bludgeons against American speech and innovation. Congress must act to protect our constitutional rights and economic prosperity.

“NetChoice applauds the Committee for its leadership on this issue critical to protected American rights and economic freedom. European regulators have been using these laws to target and undermine our speech, freedoms and competitiveness in online spaces, and it’s time to put a stop to it,” said Amy Bos, NetChoice Director of State & Federal Affairs. “Unfortunately, similar proposals in Congress and across the states would import Europe’s flawed regulatory and censorship models to America. Policymakers should decline this path to economic failure and an erosion of our Constitution. We must reject it and champion policies that protect free expression and free enterprise online. ”
