NetChoice Expresses Concerns Over Future Presidents Distorting President Trump’s New AI Executive Order

WASHINGTON—Today, President Donald Trump signed an executive order on artificial intelligence and security. While we support the President’s pro-innovation and growth agenda for America, NetChoice is concerned that some of the powers and vagueness, as well as the overall precedent of the Order, could be misused in the hands of a future administration without the same instincts on innovation and regulation as President Trump.

“Across his terms in office, President Trump has demonstrated he understands the stagnation caused by excessive red tape and the breeding ground it creates for abuse of power. NetChoice celebrated President Trump for rescinding the Biden AI Executive Order that would have set the pace of innovation in the most important technology of our lifetimes at the speed of the federal bureaucracy — a disaster for America’s economy and national security,” said Patrick Hedger, NetChoice Director of Policy.

“While we anticipate President Trump’s new Executive Order to be a light-touch and collaborative approach as long as he is in office, NetChoice is concerned that future administrations won’t honor his vision. We have seen previous administrations pressure and threaten America’s technology companies to advance partisan agendas on social media. There is no doubt future administrations will attempt to do the same when it comes to AI. Unless further guardrails against this kind of graft are put in place or Congress finally acts to deliver a national AI framework, we are concerned the collaborative framework President Trump has put forward will not remain voluntary.”
